Just grow up!

Dear Reasonable Peeps,

Kathy a Reasonable Diet VIP client recently told me that on a long commute home, she was a victim of poor planning and was hungry with no food in the car. She was tempted to pull off and get some fast food, or a candy bar or something to tide her over. Instead of playing with that thought, she asked herself -- If I was a parent who had decided my kid was going to eat better, how would I handle this situation? She came up with these ideas:

  • I’d distract her. -- Why don’t you see what you can find on the radio? Tell me about your day. Look at that couple in the car over there, what do you suppose they’re talking about.
  • I’d guarantee her -- You won’t die of hunger.
  • I’d assure her. --As soon as you walk in the door you can eat. We have food ready at home.

Kathy reported that it worked, largely because she did have food ready at home.

This fits well with the strategy recently shared in our Monday night Sure Success group. Melissa from Oklahoma says she is using her Reasonable Diet to reparenting herself using the mantra “gentle but firm.”

Here are a couple of good lessons to learn:

  1. Grow up. I don’t mean to be harsh here…but…stop acting like the whining kid and start being the adult, albeit gentle but firm.

  2. Plan and prepare. The fact that Kathy had the food prepared at home made all the difference. Just think how much easier it would have also been if she had a bottle of water and an apple with her for the drive home.

Here is to you taking care of your own needs, losing your childish excuses and being the adult in your own life – gentle but firm!

Bringing you peace of mind with regard to your diet, food and overall wellbeing.

Have a grown-up meal to
lose weight.

Less TV = Less Excess Weight

Those of you who read this newsletter know I’m always quoting the NWCR (National Weight Control Registry) that tracks more than 5,000 folks who’ve lost 30 lbs. or more and kept it off for longer than five years. One of their common characteristic is that they watch less than 10 hours of TV per week.

Now I’ve read in AARP’s May/June issue (quoting neuropsychologist Nanette Stroebel, Ph.D of the University of Colorado’s Center for Human Nutrition of Denver): Eating in front of the TV delays the “full” signal between the brain and the stomach, which can cause overeating.

The article also says that adults eat and drink more when there’s background noise. If it is music -- the louder and faster the music, the more you consume in a given time.

Why not try a quiet, candlelit, no-newspaper-reading meal one a week?

That would be the grown-up thing to do!

Surprising info on the food
you thought you knew.

Mother Says, “Eat Your Carrots.”

Reasonable dieter that you are, you probably think that you know everything there is to know about carrots. After all, they are the quintessential diet food.

          • But did you know that carrot's nutritional values increase when they are cooked?
          • Have you ever roasted carrots?
          • Did you know that the crisper is not the best place in the fridge to store carrots?

No more monkeying around!

My client Pat, who lost 25 pounds and has kept it off for more than five years, still attends the “Graduate” Reasonable Diet groups. When asked why she still attends groups, she quoted George Carlin.

“Just because you’ve got the monkey off your back does not mean that the circus has left town.” ~~ George Carlin
